Dunglass Estate wedding, East Lothian, Scotland
Dunglass Estate wedding
To say I was excited when Emma & Euan booked me for their wedding at Dunglass Estate was a big understatement. About 45 minutes drive from Edinburgh is the beautiful Dunglass Estate, East Lothian. A romantic Scottish venue with a 15th century church in the heart of the grounds, cottages for guests, a honeymoon tree house with large, beautifully manicured grounds. As soon as I saw the gothic church, the beautiful half-ruin backdrop for Emma & Euan’s nuptials, I was completely blown away! Seen with the stunning spread of flowers climbing up the pillars from florist Lottie Longman; the venue is a perfect blend of a traditional church with a wild edge. This fairy-tale church has the most dramatic, natural light; the number one priority for wedding photographers. Whenever I give advice to the couples’ choice of venue, it is always, ‘Give me all the natural light and we’ll make magic’!

Without windowpanes the church counts as an outdoor venue; this was much appreciated considering we are still in covid days. Handily, Emma & Euan were just in time to appreciate the relaxation of covid restrictions. This meant there was no cap on numbers providing the venue has space, which Dunglass Estate has in abundance. This was extra treat to make up for the couple moving their wedding day from spring to summer!
After the ceremony…
Euan surprised Emma with a visit from their sweet springer spaniel after the ceremony. I have to say I’m a fan of all animals attending weddings and please give me more wedding day dogs! Welsh cake favours and the all-important best friend and piper, are two absolute must-haves for a Welsh-Scottish fusion wedding day. We took a walk around the grounds post first dance to get some photos with what is a stunning backdrop everywhere you look. Dunglass Estate has got views of the sea in the distance, beautiful ancient woodlands around the perimeter, a nature filled pond, fields with sheep (and alpacas!) and a beautiful walled garden. A summer Scottish wedding has the benefit of sunset at around 10pm which we made the most of.
Although by this time the flowers had gone over and the garden was overgrown, Dunglass Estate’s walled garden was the spot where we took some of my absolute favourite photographs of the couple. With it’s line of trees beyond the stone walls and wild, gentle yellows of the garden gone to seed. The night ended with a sparkler exit and a spontaneous guest sing-song of ‘The Bonnie Banks o’ Loch Lomond’. It still giving me shivers! This was a very moving moment considering weddings of this size have been on hold for so long. Not to mention the restrictions on group singing. This was my favourite part of the night, seeing how much love the guests have for these two lovely people.
Congratulations Emma & Euan, I am so grateful for you including and welcoming me on your day. It will stay with me as a very special wedding day in Scotland!
