Ridgeway in the spring and summertime is my absolute favourite spot in the Newport area for family shoots. The council lets the meadow grow long, for the sake of the bees and these beautiful wild flowers appear. You cannot beat that view looking towards the foothills of the South Wales valleys. So beautifully lush and green; they make for the sweetest, natural family photos.

RIDEWAY AND ALLT-YR-YN NATURE RESERVE
Ridgeway stands at the top of the Allt-yr-yn Nature Reserve in Newport. It serves as the highest point in Newport city – it’s only a 5 minute drive from Newport train station and is such a gorgeous spot to enjoy nature with your family without driving miles. I would highly recommend exploring the area!
Allt-yr-yn Nature Reserve lies between the Monmouthshire-Brecon Canal and Allt-yr-yn viewpoint at Ridegway; a walk along the canal takes you to the Fourteen Locks Canal & Heritage Centre. The woodland itself has lots of beautiful native oak, birch, cherry & alder trees. It has ponds and an ancient wildflower meadow & it used to house an old stone quarry. The woodland is deemed as ‘ancient, semi-natural’, similarly to St Julian’s Park, meaning that it has been continuously covered with native trees since the 1600s. Allt-yr-yn nature reserve is a great natural area, brimming with wildlife to explore, play, climbs trees & build a den with your family & the view from the top of Ridgeway is simply stunning.

WHAT TIME?
Early morning & afternoon spots available. I tend to avoid midday so that the sun is a little lower in the sky for a more gentle light. With sunset currently being at 9:30pm, this leaves lots of time after school for catching the light!
